Events and dresses

Hundreds of brides-to-be women camped outside the store in the 5300 block of Wisconsin Avenue all night in hopes of getting a designer wedding dress at a bargain price.

The women showed up in teams and many said they have a strategy for getting the perfect dress. Many women grab as many dresses as they can, have the bride try them on in order to find the perfect one, and if that doesn’t happen the women begin trading.

The dresses range in price from about $240 to $699. The stores had 1,500 dresses to offer during the event.

Where?
The annual Running of the Brides took place Friday at Filene’s Basement in Mazza Gallerie in Washington.

Poughkeepsie man learned from Brown When Derek Wilson is asked about his education, he often answers, "I've got that J.B. degree."

Wilson, a City of Poughkeepsie resident, got his start in the music industry and received much of his training from music legend James Brown, "the Godfather of Soul."

Brown, 73, died of heart failure on Christmas morning, days after being hospitalized with pneumonia, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music.

"His songs are staples," said City of Poughkeepsie resident Barbra Baker-Baylor, who worked for Brown in 1991 making formal gowns for his background vocalists. "There was no one like him."

Wilson worked for Brown starting in 1989 as a part-time intern and was laer promoted to the West Coast director of promotions for Brownstone Records.

He said Brown taught him the importance of dressing well and showing respect. affordable prom dress

The Oregon Wedding Showcase is this weekend in Salem. This weekend, a bevy of brides-to-be descend on Salem for the Oregon Wedding Showcase.

The $70 billion wedding industry keeps expanding: everything from pre-wedding striptease lessons to a tricked-out limo now is part of the gig.

We talked to Judy Van Valkenberg, the showcase's organizer and wedding industry veteran, about bridal trends for 2007.

Destination weddings

More couples are opting to get married in places such as Hawaii, Mexico and Italy -- and to bring the whole family along for the ride.

Part of the reason destination weddings are popular is that they naturally limit the guest list, Van Valkenberg said.

Flowers

"It seems like every bride I've quoted wants pink and brown," said Beth Vaughn, owner of Rhyme and a Reason Florals at 1223 Commercial St. 2007 winter formal dresses

Silent Night, Deadly Remake? Now here's one we should have seen coming: Sony's Screen Gems division has decided to dust off the chintzy old indie known as Silent Night, Deadly Night and give the thing the ol' remake treatment. Aged horror fans will no doubt remember the swirl of controversy that met the arrival of the original SNDN advertisements back in 1984. (The moral of the story was this: Mommies don't like TV commercials in which someone dressed as Santa Claus hacks people up with garden tools.)The guys behind the remake will be producer David Foster and writer/director Joe Harris, whose The Tripper is causing all sorts of bubbling geekdom at the various horror sites. The filmmaker recently shared the news with Moviehole.net, and here's what he had to say about this particular remake: It "will not be a remake of the original picture, but a total reimagining using the basic concept as a platform for a new franchise ... 2007 prom gowns

Beyonce Knowles Interview, DreamGirls MoviesOnline recently caught up with Beyonce Knowles at the New York City press day for her new film, "Dreamgirls," the groundbreaking Tony Award-winning Broadway phenomenon that has now come to life as an all-new motion picture adaptation written and directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon. "Dreamgirls" is a compelling story of love and loyalty, fame and betrayal that tracks the struggle, sacrifices and triumphs of a group of outsiders carrying their landmark sound into mainstream America in the 1960s and ‘70s during a period of vast social and political change.

The film is set in Detroit, the Motor City, where African-American music is on the verge of breaking down the doors of the American music scene.

Curtis Taylor, Jr. (Jamie Foxx) is aching to make his mark in the music business – to form his own record label and get its sound heard on mainstream radio at a time when civil rights are still only a whisper in the streets. 2007 prom dresses designs
