Poughkeepsie man learned from Brown When Derek Wilson is asked about his education, he often answers, "I've got that J.B. degree."

Wilson, a City of Poughkeepsie resident, got his start in the music industry and received much of his training from music legend James Brown, "the Godfather of Soul."

Brown, 73, died of heart failure on Christmas morning, days after being hospitalized with pneumonia, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music.

"His songs are staples," said City of Poughkeepsie resident Barbra Baker-Baylor, who worked for Brown in 1991 making formal gowns for his background vocalists. "There was no one like him."

Wilson worked for Brown starting in 1989 as a part-time intern and was laer promoted to the West Coast director of promotions for Brownstone Records.

He said Brown taught him the importance of dressing well and showing respect. affordable prom dress
